Paralegal Professions

The paralegal profession can be broken down into many different career paths that one can pursue. To move forward, a person may choose to go to school and obtain a paralegal certificate. Or a legal secretary already employed at a law firm may begin to take on more and more paralegal responsibilities and eventually be promoted. A recent graduate contemplating law school may minor in paralegal or legal studies and work as a paralegal before making the commitment to attend law school.

There are many different paths that lead toward a paralegal profession, and regardless of how one ends up as a paralegal, there is always room to grow and excel even further.

You may also note that there are specialties within the paralegal profession as a whole. For instance, there are nurse paralegals or legal nurse consultants who have a background in nursing and have chosen to pursue paralegalism.

Within the paralegal industry, you may also notice that many experienced paralegals have chosen to take the independent route and become freelance paralegals. In larger law firms and corporations, there are paralegal supervisors or managers who have been promoted to oversee other paralegals within their respective legal department. In different arenas of law, you will find paralegal experts; for instance, a paralegal may choose to work as a family law paralegal or a litigation paralegal and strive to hone his or her skills within that given field.
